How Does Plasmapheresis Work?
Before treatment begins, important laboratory parameters are assessed, and a physician evaluates whether the treatment is appropriate.
In double-filtration plasmapheresis, the blood is filtered outside the body in two stages. First, the blood cells are separated from the blood plasma. While the blood cells are returned directly to the body, the plasma is passed through a second, specially selected filter. This filter can retain certain larger molecules and high-molecular-weight substances, such as certain autoantibodies, immune complexes, and lipoproteins. Smaller plasma components, such as minerals and albumin, can largely pass through the filter. The filtered plasma components are then returned to the body together with the blood cells.
The treatment is performed on an outpatient basis under continuous medical supervision. A session typically takes approximately 2 to 3 hours.
